**NEW** WEEKLY MODELING SESSION: Week 008 Cut Away Engine

Ok, week eight and some hard surfaces again and time to get your lathe and array tools out. A good way to practice making engine parts and casings. I would do a model like this in Rhino or using Maya nurbs but this week we can attempt to make a Silo Jet Engine.

COMMENTS:

Make the FULL engine but make it so that the casings can be cut away as needed to show internal workings. Add pipes, wires, valves as you see fit.

Good luck and enjoy!

Hi southern,
this one should be easier for me than the session from the last Week. Im trying to finish the Model for the last week. I hope i can post the result.

For this session you can find some information (references) about Hydro power turbines under:
http://www.voithhydro.com/vh_de_pas_hydro_power.htm

Happy modeling.

Cheers
XBO

Though I like the info on the link, xbo, those are for water turbines which have a very different construction. I believe what Glen has shown as the example to model is a gas-powered turbine similar to ones that you might see on a jet...

Nop turbine and hydro turbine have a small differences but the principle is more or less the same.

By the way. I wrote "Hydro power turbines info".
I put this info to have an idea how to construct a turbine.
Unfortunately i didnt found big pics from Voith in there site.
I saw this turbines live and there are impressive.

Cheers

yeesh. I did like your link, but if someone was trying to model the parts, the viscosity of water vs. air makes a big difference how thick the blades would need to be- I just wanted to point that out before someone got too far into it. I was not trying to be snarky, xbo, but just trying to help. I myself haven't gotten too far into this model. Trying to figure out a shortcut for the blades, but so far haven't had much luck.

fan

you can select the line for each blade then bevel and extrude and the fan will appear.

For the Blades just make one, postion the Pivot point away from the item (M) then repeat it enough times. In fact, I think I'll make this one.

Thanks, Glen. Array was in the dustbin of my brain; totally forgot about it! I tend to use a lean interface and the keyboard shorts that I know by heart...Array will work well. I think for viewing this, it might be interesting to use the cutaway feature in Photooshop extended.

I just used copy and paste for most of it. FOr each fin section I made one fin blade then moved the pivot to the center. Then used copy/paste rotate 180. Selected both, copy/paste. Rotate 90, repeat, rotate 45, repeat, rotate 22.5 etc...pretty old school but no more than a few seconds to do a full set of blades.

parel posted a good point you could do that but you would need to tweak its shape a bit to get it looking right.

@ southern,

i have a small question.
How did you do the Smooth Symmetry run correctly?
I tried to cut the part in the middle but looks incorrect and took my a lot of work ours to get done the cutaway engine

I will make a screen shot tonight.

another turbine

ok, a little late, but somehowe i like hard surface modeling so I tried this one. When I looked at this thread the first time i had no idea how to make the radial arrays (and in fact, it would be cool to have better array tools... in modo it would have been a 5 min job). But after some hints here i managed to do it with the copy & paste method. So, its been fun, more hard surface mod. please, ill try to be quicker next time ;-)
