**NEW** WEEKLY MODELING SESSION: Week 003 Jasen Strong Character

Ok, week three. This week the amazing Jasen Strong has allowed us to use some of his character sketches for our modeling reference. If you want to see more of his work take a look here:

http://jasenstrong.artstooge.com/

Converting line drawings into 3D models is not as easy as it first looks. You need to transfer the sense of personality from the page to the model and it doesn't always translate that well. Try one or all three and maybe set them in an underwater scene if time allows.

COMMENTS:

Again this week focus on great edge loops and getting a really dynamic pose Go for the `cartoon look` in your modeling and keep that sense of movement going. Model these creature `in pose` and don't worry about rigging. Make this a static show piece.

Good luck and enjoy!

Not so big an uptake this week Kyro. Great start. As I've already mentioned this will make a great show piece for your portfolio. I might have a go at the Octopus tonight.

Seahorse

Hi, I'm new to these forums, and to Silo, which I find amazing. I saw this sessions and found some time to start and try, a little late into the week but maybe I can finish. I chose the seahorse, and this is where I am now, concentrating in the form, couple of tri's and stuff that need to be fixed, I'm trying to pay attention to loops but I'm no expert... any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi MrTinkertrain and welcome,
glad you could join us. you got some nice form going on there. Don't worry about tri's and n-gons, you can fix those later hehe.
and you're not late..looks like we all are late this week, so you're just on time

A little later starting this week guys but the quality is there. If would be great to see all three characters in a scene.

MrTinkertrain. Just fix the Tri's at the end of each session. You don't seem to have too many problematic ones but keep the object info panel open and keep checking how many you have.

I've been maxed out on projects this week and although I use Silo for 100% of my modeling I have to resort to some form of render solution every now and then. I'm using Maya this week at a cleint request and it slows me down significantly It's like taking a bath with my socks on.

Hi guys

modelled the rest of my octo on a ship - i can really recommend that, great fun just to model and look out side the window and see the ocean. while the ferry is roling up and down.

dont feel i captured the concept completely.
And my mesh is abit messed up. Anyway quick and dirty does the job.

like your clean mesh georg, allthough i feel the head should have depth in it, looks a bit thin compared to the concept.

take care guys and have a nice weekend. - while i'll lie in bed with green stuff running out of my nose

/H

I finish the model for now, I would like to texture him with UV maps but that knowledge is non-existent... I took a lot of time trying to keep the mesh as clean as possible, and fixing things that probably didn't need to be fixed, but everything for the sake of practice...

hi MrTinkertrainand Georg, nice model guys, good job.
Tinker: If you would like to make a uv layout, there's a good tutorial from Wes on the modeling wiki.
http://www.nevercenter.com/wiki/inde...Silo_Tutorials
this helped me out alot to figure out uv unwrapping in silo.

Well done Georg on the modeling for this session. You've been selected as the weekly T-shirt winner. Nice models also from MrTinkertrain and vader_dk.
