Silo 2 Public Beta 10c (Windows and Mac)

Hi Everyone,
First, the beta disclaimers as usual. Your Silo 1.4 registration codes will not work on this beta, but you can use it fully until it expires. Our usual this-is-beta-software-so-expect-imperfection disclaimer can be read here:

http://silo3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6803

Some of the changes made for this beta are listed below:

- Rotation and scaling of objects will rotate and scale displacement (note this only applies in object selection mode).
- Subdivision errors that were causing weird results and crashing have been fixed (several were caused by one insidious bug, so hopefully it fixed many crashing errors)
- Center seam on displacement painting is still being worked on, but for now it will work better in the cases where it was snapping center seam verts to weird places before.
- Made some tweaks to hopefully correct the ghosting some people are experiencing with displacement painting.
- Othr minor bug fixes

We still are trying to make the center seam with displacement painting be a non-issue, and we still want to tweak a few things like adding the option to export the iso surface without having to refine the control mesh. We'll see what we can do about those things before launch.

We've got a new website that's about to launch, which will offer the 2.0 beta more readily to the open world, as well as allow you to purchase your 2.0 license upgrades if you do not qualify for the free upgrade. We also have a new forum design coming (you will probably still be able to choose the current forum design if you prefer it). Watch for the changes!

OK, the newest betas. Your Silo 1.4 registration codes will not work on this beta, but you can use it fully until it expires:

Edit: No more betas. You can get the release version at nevercenter.com

10C says I have 3 days left, the same time I had remaining on 10A. Any idea why this would happen?

Thank you for this last update. I really love it. The spin edge bugs are also gone now, I can finally use it without worrying whether it will corrupt my mesh.

Keep it up fixing those pesky bugs.

Small thing:
When right-clicking on a toolbar you can choose wich toolbar/editor to close. But it doesn't show any text of the main toolbar, just an X. It does show the names of the editors correct.

Wow new beta. I want to report a bit on this one :???:

In terms of ghosting/artifacts here's when I get them this side:

* Symmetry mirrored side causes artifacts on the side you're working on,
it's like some of the ghost of the strokes on the other side.

* Move brush causes artifacts as in it feels like the display is not keeping up with the
actual moving at times. Seen it work better before?

That's about it - not much I'd guess.

I really like these news. I'd say yes it's playing maybe a little better but with the weaker smoothing it's a slightly bigger pain in the backside.

That's such great news (!)

Wanted to know if we're painting displacement in tangent space?
It seems less destructive and preety well behaved overall imho

A couple more things here, interface wise:

* Don't really like the buttons highlights the way they don't go all the way round the
button (just top and bottom highlight)

* Don't really like the icon logo, sorry to say. maybe the bigger version is nicer if it's
final?

In terms of selection, including the really nice new lasso select:

* In Max you get a window/crossing option. I much prefer crossing. It seems Silo defaults to window. Is this optional by any chance?

And that's all my comments. Will be enjoying the beta sometime.
NC please keep it up

Great to see this progress even if it doesn't fully answer all of peoples subdivision concerns.

Here are some little niggles that I still have which hopefully aren't hard to fix:

> Extruding with stickey key stays in local move after letting go if you only hold for a short time.

> Stickey keys (particularly for scale, translate, rotate) act oddly if, on the first time using them, you let go of the stickey key before letting go of the mouse button (I am used to letting go of the mouse first but beginners won't be).

> Local scale (and probably others) is sluggish if working on a small scale.

Good luck guys!

this bug introduced after 8b, still present ....

after MATERIALS > CREATE UV PROXY you get into 3view: persp, uv3d and uv2d
if you press space on any of the 3 views you get thrown into the default 4view setup!

Slide does not work on 'SplitLoop' when in multiselection mode (select an edge). if you are in edge selection mode it works; in face selection mode it works; and in multiselection mode if selecting faces it works

great update..
Object rot/scale working great here
Of course i am complaining about tangent space, as you know...
All those complains started only because of me and my damn xsilo pipeline plugins, so about that....

The first PC beta installer for 10c didn't create the autosaves directory. The current one linked at the top of this thread now does, so you may wish to reinstall (again :x)

how is it possible to get a useful export of an iso surface? I'm behind the times on this.

i think the workaround that let you rot/scale displaced objects is sufficient for a silo2 release, since silo is not supposed to be used in animation pipeline. I would release it.
Though if one day tangent space can be implemented i am worrying about the fact that it would break backward file compatibility. Maybe an external tangent to object and object to tangent space converter could be written as part of xsilo to workaround this.. but that sounds complicate to find to which face displacement data belongs to.

Thanks for the update.

Seems to be working good so far. Glade to hear that the displacement issue with scaling and rotating is finally fixed.

I'll get to reporting bugs for this build when I can.
