Rhino head sculpt.
Hi all,
I've just uploaded an online tutorial showing how I made a Silo 3D Rhino head as a concept test before sculpting in real clay. I am currently doing the ZBrush tutorial part and then I will post the Clay sculpting portion. http://www.southerngfx.co.uk/general...silo_rhino.php ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Of course, I am sure the Rhino head tutorial is great... I just keep waiting for someone to do a quality "Sculpting in Silo" tutorial... though I think I know why that doesn't exist...

To be honest it wasn't going to be 3D at all. I did my recent Kong sculpt (see below) with real water based clay and made a load of newbie cock ups. Too thick in places, letting it dry at different rates, making it just too damn heavy etc. I decided on doing a Rhino head in clay as a second attempt (I had 50Kg of Clay to get rid of after a stupid order I placed! Doh!) This quick Rhino head was little more than a way to flesh out my concept a little. Arse-about-face I know but it's how I work sometimes. I simply screen-shot what I was modeling for half an hour and then wrote the text. The ZBrush part including rendering was a little over 15 mins so this is not an elaboate model or tutorial.
I agree about the need for a Silo Sculpting tutorial and some good examples. It's hard for me as I've been a ZBrush user since the begining (late 1990's) and I find it so damn convienient to sculpt with. ZBrush for Sculpting (for me) is what Silo is for core polygon work. I love it because I can make it do what I want quickly. Say that on a mudbox forum and I'd be hanging by now..lol. I'll take a look into the Silo sculpting thing. Maybe talk to Dave and see what we can come up with. Kong sculpt blog post http://southerngfxblog.blogspot.com/...ased-clay.html

looks good glen. one thing that caught my eye is the base of the horn is just about straight horizontal. which looks a little unnatural. looks better in the sketch. there is a little more breakup in the sketch also. all around solid stuff tho.

Cheers guys. Not happy with the final look at all. It just show that the best creature models are the ones that stick as close to nature as possible. I'm going to rebuild the head and stick to an exact Rhino profile I think. THIs is why I do it digitally first. So annoying if you feel like this and it's done in clay...

A friend asked about how I create the edge loop around the mouth. Here's a little silent vid to show how.

This post reminded me that I'd done a Rhino sculpt ages ago and forgot to ever post it.
It's now on my blog http://robsadventuresinsculpting.blo.../05/rhino.html The base mesh was done in Silo but it was sculpted elsewhere. So thanks for reminding me about that Glen. And good luck with the clay sculpture. |

Great tut Glen, thanks for sharing. And thanks for the sculpting tut suggestion MarkInTx. I recognize it's an area that been missing, and it's something I've been thinking about. I'll see if I can get some wheels turning.
Thanks, David |

Thanks Glen.
It was based on a set of images from www.3d.sk. One of the things I liked about that rhino was that his horns have a kind of triangular cross section with a flat front. Not sure if that's a common shape for them but I thought it was a really cool feature. I've posted a screengrab of the base mesh. Made in Silo, naturally. ![]() http://robsadventuresinsculpting.blo...sculpt-in.html It's modelled in a pretty similar way to yours. Except I use Symmetry rather than instance mirroring. You get a better smoothing across the seam that way. This model has a bit of a history. It was one I thought I'd lost to a Silo bug in the beta days when it wouldn't reload the model, but the bug got fixed and I could load the model up again. Then it went in and out of Mudbox and Zbrush while I was deciding which to buy. So some of it was sculpted in each. I didn't have a PC capable of subdividing the model to this level for a long time so it sat around in a sculpted but not detailed stage (which is when it went onto my web page). Then I finally got a decent PC and it got finished off. And then I forgot to post it on the website. ![]() |

Now when we got the Decimation Master for ZBrush itīs possible to render this in any 3D app!
Great work Southern! I would do the same workflow, Silo - UV in renderapp(Maya - ZBrush - Renderapp (Maya) Danne

Actually Glen I was watching a show called myth busters and they did in fact polish a turd, I don't remember for which animals. and thanks for the tut, looks awesome. Graham |
