Hijack away people!

It has taken an interesting turn, my reasons for taking up Silo are purely complimentary to Maya, those of you familiar with Maya will know that the poly tools are not exactly state of the art. Silo is infinitely faster to model with.

That said, Maya still has a few advantages modeling wise with history and local/global coordinates. I tend to switch between the two a bit, but Silo is at least 90% of my poly modeling workflow.

I can't imagine going back to Maya for Poly modeling, and I feel like my modeling skills have increased 10 fold since I took up Silo

Cheers, Nick

Thanks very much to you both, sorry for altering the intended path of your thread but at least you can know that you've helped recruit one more Silo supporter!

Now to decide between Bunkspeed and Strata!

I'll get my but out off here now and to the newbie section!

Laurel,

I'm just stunned. The renders are great.

many thanks for all the kind words!

I am embarking on a new model right now, the Audi R8, it is going quite smoothly so far, i have spent about 2 days on it and the shell is complete. I am trying to work a bit slower and more precise on this one, leaving all the seam bevels and detailing until last.

I might post some wips, but knowing me I will just power through and render it!

Although I am going to attempt at least some of the interior on this one (dashboard and seats at the very least) so we will see how that goes!

cheers, Nick

My Audi R8 as it stands, many details to finish, and a bit of cleanup to do also. Some stuff is blatantly wrong, I will probably fix up in the new year. Spent about 3 days in total need a few more solid days to finish.

have a great christmas and an even better new year

Nick

Splines

Hello Nick,
I just bought Silo and I am working through different tutorials. Did you create the initial splines in Maya? I can use an image/viewport, then surface tool, but I am not able to simply create the initial frame like in your first image - where the edges and vertices are all hanging in space. Thanks in advance.

I would be more than happy to send you examples of the process, and any stage of modeling for you to have a look at.
I am just learning this myself, so I am sure my methods aren't perfect, we get CAD models here at work all the time from car manufacturers for tv commercials. Now those are perfect!
But they are done for manufacturing so they need to be!

Could I ask you to send examples of your process. My two boys (8 and 7) love cars, and are always asking me to help them build things in Silo. I didn't know you could make just curves in Silo, like you can in Maya. Haha.

I believe I can answer both those questions easily, the splines are simply made with the edge tool, then subdivided to make a curve. I then refine the subdivision (shift C) to make more points to snap to.

All the best with your kids modeling, that is amazing to hear!
I would be happy to email you my models at any stage of completion if it is any help to you.

Cheers, Nick

Let's see, "Create > Edge Tool"... Well, looky there. Ok, tried a few tests; that works quite nicely. This is going to be fun. Thanks Nick!

Car Models

Nick,

Great job on the cars! The renders are fantastic. What kind of render times did these images generate? Also what scale did you model the cars at?
